The design goals for the building included forging stronger connections with the MIT campus and the City of Cambridge, creating a “heart” within the East Campus, and encouraging collaboration among Sloan faculty and students.

The new building, designed and constructed in association with Moore Ruble Yudell, consolidates the Sloan faculty offices and includes new classrooms, group study spaces, an executive education suite, and dining and social spaces. The new underground garage effectively removes 400 cars from surface parking and converts four acres of asphalt parking to terraced public garden spaces.

The building is LEED Gold certified. Sustainability in all categories — environmental, energy, and resources — was a design priority. Window glazing with integrated shading and daylight controls manage lighting energy and reduce solar heat gain within individual spaces. Hydronic heating and cooling systems include chilled beams, radiant panels and radiant flooring, all reducing energy use and noise while improving occupant comfort. An “intelligent irrigation” system responds to conditions of the landscaped areas as well as forecasted weather.
